Sammy Tanner, a seven-time Grand National Champion, became an AMA Expert in 1958, finishing sixth in his debut season. Excelling in half-mile races, he dominated Ascot Park from 1959, earning the nickname "The King of Ascot" after breaking an eight-mile record and winning the first AMA Grand National there. Competing until 1972, Tanner won four Ascot Grand Nationals, seven AMA Nationals, including the Springfield Mile, and 408 AMA races.
