Darryl began building and racing go karts at the age of 12. The family business became the first Yamaha motorcycle franchise in Houston. Ossa soon followed. Darryl earned his national number in 1973 competing in 7 or 8 races each week in the Midwest, and won the 1975 Yamaha Gold Cup short track national in the Astrodome. His nephew, 1993 500cc World Champion Kevin Schwantz, later honored his uncle by selecting #34 for his roadracing career.
